Our Critical Reading and Critical Writing approach
brings what is taught in the GEP to the mainstream
Using the Critical Reading and Critical Writing approach, Dr Daniel Chua (ex-MOE teacher, HOD and PSLE marker) has guided 82% (36 out of 44) of his pioneer P6 students towards achieving A* for PSLE English.
Beyond his MOE experience, Dr Chua has also taught trainee teachers in NIE and Masters students in NTU.
PARENTS AND CHILDREN IN SINGAPORE OFTEN FACE THESE QUESTIONS:
Is your child putting in all the effort he/she possibly can but still getting stuck at 60-70 marks for English exams?
What is the secret to scoring full marks for Comprehension?
Is there a proven way to achieving 15/15 for Comprehension Cloze Passage?
How can your child do well for Synthesis and Transformation?
Is there a way to consistently ace English Exams?
If your child urgently needs to know the answers to these questions, you have come to the right place.
Who am I?
Hi! I am Dr Daniel Chua, the founder and Executive Director of this innovative English school that develops critical thinking skills.
In my second year of teaching, I was lucky to be sent for further training in NIE to teach high-ability and gifted students, in preparation to teach in the GEP. During this period of transition, I took up the HOD role and had to defer joining the GEP teaching team. Although disappointed that I could not apply my training in the GEP, I was blessed to be assigned to teach the top P4 class in mainstream.
Using what I learnt from the NIE course to teach the high-ability and gifted students, I taught this P4 until they reached P6. They did well for their PSLE – 36 out of 44 students scored A* for English!
This is a testament that the methods that I used not only helps GEP students, but also benefits mainstream students. I continue to refine my approach and teach our group of motivated and inquisitive students here at Cognitus Academy.

Who benefits from Critical Reading and Critical Writing?
When our students first join us, we find most of them lacking in the lowest level of critical reading skills.
It is important to find the right tutors for your child and while some tuition centres may provide extra coaching, they may not have the proven strategies to improve your child’s English.
Especially with national exams around the corner, it is time for your child to seek the right help to master PSLE English.
Lower Secondary Students
It is essential for your child to have a good foundation in English at the Lower Secondary stage for them to have an easier time mastering English at the Upper Secondary level.
This will also prepare them for their O/N Level Exams.
So, what is Critical Reading and Writing?

This time round his attitude towards tuition has changed, I can see that he is really keen to improve.”
Some tuition centres may provide extra coaching for your child, but do not have proven strategies and strong pedagogies to fundamentally improve your child’s English. Sometimes, their teachers may not have gone through proper training and class size can reach 20.
Home-based one-to-one tuition can cost $70/80 per hour for experienced teachers. That’s too costly! On the other hand, teacher who charge lower fees are often current students and untrained teachers who do not know the exam requirements well enough to guide your child successfully.
